All the movies I’m watching this fall

Autumn has always been my favorite season but this year its arrival feels bittersweet. Even though pumpkins have been scattered across my home and I’ve been sipping on pumpkin spiced drinks for a month, I haven’t been fully embracing fall like in past years. Part of me has been wanting to hold on to warm evenings and the sun setting after 8pm, lush green trees and the smell of the grill, shorts and flip flops. Having a kid has made me so acutely aware of time and how fleeting it can be and so despite my love for all things fall, it’s been a slower goodbye to summer this year. With that being said, I think I’m finally ready for this new season… I’d say this is perfect timing as the autumn equinox officially arrived today.

These chilly days have been so glorious. Neighborhood walks and weekend hikes have been refreshing. Most days, you can find me in a sweatshirt with a warm mug of something between my hands. Our home smells of baked apples and a pumpkin (Jackson’s pumpkin) decorates our doorsteps. Days are more relaxed as I gravitate towards the coziness of our home rather than the sense of adventure summer brings.

My favorite way to spend an afternoon lately is sitting on the floor with Jackson, a mug of tea in hand (or coffee, if I’m feeling particularly sleepy), playing with him and his toys, and watching a movie in the background. Just like there are movies we associate with the Christmas season, there are so many that call my name in the fall.

So, pull on your coziest sweats, make a mug of your favorite warm drink, grab a snack, climb onto the couch, and start working your way through this movie list with me!

Magical:

Practical Magic
“There are some things I know for certain. Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.”
Harry Potter series
Although I love the entire series, there is something comforting and cozy about the first Harry Potter movie.
Hocus Pocus
No Halloween season is complete without this movie. I’m also so excited to watch Hocus Pocus 2!

Romantic Comedies:

When Harry Met Sally
“I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Bewitched
A cute take on the classic show. Also, Isabel Bigelow lives in the most charming home.
You’ve Got Mail
“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”
Julie and Julia
Because fall makes me want to spend my days cooking.
Sleepless in Seattle
I’ve never watched this movie but I’m on a Meg Ryan kick so it made the list for this fall.

Spooky:

Halloween
I’m not a big fan of horror movies… most are cheesy and too farfetched… but I do enjoy this classic.
The Omen
Julia Stiles stars in this spooky remake.
The Others
Nicole Kidman and her children live in a house they are convinced is haunted. Just wait until the ending!
Sleepy Hollow
A classic tale of the headless horseman.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
I grew up watching this movie on repeat (thanks little brother) but it’s still so good! Now I just need to find somewhere to stream this ancient (1948) classic.

Family Friendly:

Halloweentown series
A Disney channel original about a young girl who discovers she (and her family) are witches.
The Haunted Mansion
A realtor (Eddie Murphy) and his family become trapped in a haunted mansion.
The Addams Family
Did anyone else want to be Wednesday as a kid?

Back to School:

Good Will Hunting
Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon. This epic cast created an epic movie.
Dead Poets Society
Another movie I haven’t watched yet but have added to my list this fall.

What are some of your favorite fall movies?

Happy cozy season. Happy autumn. And happy watching.

Love, Jessica
