Healthier hot cocoa

We’re getting our first snowstorm of the season tonight and I feel like a child again. I’m so excited to wake up tomorrow to a world blanketed in white, to bundle up the kiddos and pull them around in their sled, to make snow angels and build snowmen. And then, when our fingers and toes feel like they’re about to fall off, come inside to warm up in front of a fire and sip hot cocoa.

That being said, have you ever looked at the food label on a box of hot cocoa mix? It’s pretty appalling. Sugar, of course is the first ingredient, but more concerning is the corn syrup and hydrogenated oils found in a box of Swiss Miss. So instead of buying a box of highly processed garbage, it’s easy to make your own hot cocoa!

Below, I’ve listed two different sweetener options: honey and coconut sugar. My favorite version is made with honey but both are very yummy. Raw honey is filled with antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, and can improve blood sugar levels.

While all versions of sugar should be consumed in moderation (some would argue they shouldn’t be consumed at all) coconut sugar is a more natural sweetener than traditional white table sugar and has a slightly lower glycemic index (meaning it won’t spike your blood sugar as high). This version of hot chocolate is delicious and overall healthier than anything you’ll buy in the store!

Hot Cocoa

2 heaping tablespoons raw honey or coconut sugar

1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 cup milk of choice (we use whole cow milk)

whipped cream – optional

Directions: Combine coconut sugar or honey, cocoa powder, vanilla and milk to a saucepan and cook on low to medium heat, whisking frequently until warm and thickened (approximately 5 minutes). Pour into mug, top with whipped cream and enjoy hot!
