Salt dough ornaments

I love adding homemade decorations to our home throughout the year. The memories that go along with creating them are scattered on our walls, along our mantle, above our windows, and currently on our Christmas tree. They are not pieces you can find in a store. They are not perfect. And we often end up with a big mess to clean up after we finish making them. But they are priceless because my kids created them and they help to make our house into a home.

My two year old and I made salt dough Christmas ornaments last week and we both had so much fun. It’s a super easy recipe with only 2 ingredients you likely have in the cabinet already. We kept ours natural but they would also look really cute if you decorated with paint, glitter, gloss, etc. They’d also be a great gift for family, friends, or hosts. Honestly, I think I’m going to make another batch and decorate them myself!

Salt Dough

1 cup salt

2 cups flour

1-2 cups water

Directions: Combine salt and flour in a mixing bowl. Slowly add water, mixing as you go, until you get to the consistency you prefer. We used about 1.5 cups.

Roll dough out on floured surface and use cookie cutters to create shapes. Press little hands/feet into dough to preserve those tiny features on an ornament… we even did one of our dogs paw print (see below). Using a straw, punch a hole for string at the top of your ornaments. Place shapes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 200 degrees for 1-2 hours or until hard to touch.

Allow ornaments to cool before adding string/ribbon and hanging on the tree or before decorating.

Storage: If making in advance, store dough in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
