Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

My toddler is not a great eater so I’ve been experimenting with different smoothie recipes in an effort to sneak some nutrients and protein into his little body. This one we’ve been making on repeat because it’s delicious! It tastes like a treat rather than a healthy smoothie and is toddler approved! Win. Win.

Let’s talk a little about the ingredients in this recipe because they contain so many health benefits (if you don’t care and just want the recipe, scroll down and skip this part).

Cherries: Cherries are high in anthocyanins and polyphenols which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help combat free radials in our bodies that lead to chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. They also contain other vitamins including as A, C and and E, improve sleep and muscle soreness.

Protein: One could write a book about the health benefits of protein so let’s just talk about a few. Protein is an important building block to bones and muscle, it helps to reduce muscle wasting and aging, repairs damaged tissue, and helps us to stay full longer. And most of us aren’t getting enough protein in our diets.

Chia seeds: Chia seeds are high in fiber and polyphenols (antioxidants – see above) and help to improve digestion.

Honey: Honey is another ingredient that contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has anti microbial activity and can improve blood sugar levels.

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

2-4 ice cubes

1/2 cup frozen cherries (about 12)

1 cup milk of choice (we use whole cows milk)

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1 teaspoon raw honey

Sprinkle of sea salt

Directions: Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Pour into your favorite glass. Enjoy!
